PROACTIVE APPROACH TOWARDS FLIGHT SAFETY

Aviation business military or civil, demands a very high degree of safety. A Proactive approach is required to ensure safety. Some suggestions are as follows:

    • Give wide publicity to safety aspects.
    • Increase awareness regarding safe practices.
    • Organise talks, discussions and brainstorming sessions.
    • Include safety aspects in the training and continuity syllabus, curriculum and testing procedure.
    • Include safety aspects in all briefings and debriefing.
    • Undertake periodic safety pledge to follow rules in letter and spirit.
    • Conduct Regular Aerospace safety audits.
    • Utilise modern training aids and simulators.
    • Employ effective Anti-Bird measures.
    • Employ effective FOD measures.
    • Instill sense of ownership among all operators.
    • Conduct regular hangar safety audits.
    • Take extra care of legacy aircraft and equipment.
    • Insist on safety during maintenance activities and ground handling.
    • Conduct all agencies emergency drills regularly.
    • Ensure all documents are up to date.
    • Identify weak crew and take corrective action.

    • Ensuring Safe flying and operating Environment.
    • Deal with safety violations in a strict manner.
    • Adopt proactive approach towards planning, monitoring and supervision of activities and events.

DIGITAL ADDICTION – PART 1: UNDERSTANDING DA

 

Defining DA. Digital addiction can be defined as excessive, obsessive and compulsive use of digital technology. There is a thin line between the need to use a device and the compulsion to use the same. DA is becoming a common phenomenon mainly impacting adolescents and adults and is more common in singles.

Emotional Symptoms. The emotional symptoms could include following:

Anxiety

Loneliness

Stress

Depression

Loss of sense of time

Isolation

Agitation

Lack of concentration

Physical Effects. Physical affects could be as follows:

Backache

Headache

Weight loss / gain

Strained vision

Insomnia

Threats. DA threatens to subvert ones attention from essentials and has potential of negative impact on the general wellbeing. It starts hampering normal life, cutting off people from physical society and relationships.

Remedial measures. Some of the remedial measures are as follows:

Restricting use of smart phones and internet.

Laying down timings.

Removal of unnecessary apps.

Turning off notifications and alerts.

De-addiction. National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences has started a clinic (Service for Healthy use of Technology) for internet de-addiction.

TEN GOLDEN RULES FOR AVIATION SAFETY

1. Aircraft fly as per laws of physics.

2. Aircraft are not aware of seniority, skill level or qualifications of the aircrew.

3. Superior skill and judgment should be used to avoid potentially unsafe situations rather than to get out of them.

4. Always respect elements of weather and terrain.

5. Strictly follow SOP, orders and instructions.
“Do what is documented and document what you do”.

6. Comprehensive briefing and debriefing is intrinsic part of any flying activity.

7. Aviation is no place for shortcuts, complacency or unnecessary risk taking.

8. If in doubt – “abort” is better option than “press on”.
Fly another day / time.

9. 3Rs Rule – Right person, Right equipment and Right procedure for all aviation related activity.

10. Extra caution / care is required for legacy aircraft and equipment.
