Gandhiji was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar city of Gujara<\/span>t.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n He is revered the world over as one of history\u2019s most transformative and\u00a0inspirational figures known for his paragon of ethical living and pacifism.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n He was a fearless campaigner for the\u00a0rights and dignity of all people, whose constant and unwavering promotion of non-violence as a tool to win over hearts and minds has forever left its mark on the world.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n His life achievement stands unique in political history. He invented a completely new and humane means for the liberation war. He is admired for his calm, courage and compassion.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n In India he is referred to as Bapu<\/em><\/strong> (<\/em>father of the nation). Origin of this title is traced back to a radio address (on Singapore radio) on 6 July 1944 by\u00a0Subhash Chandra Bose where Bose addressed Gandhiji as “The Father of the Nation”.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n He was also given the title of Mahatma<\/em><\/strong>, (taken from the\u00a0Sanskrit\u00a0words\u00a0maha – <\/em>meaning\u00a0great<\/em> and\u00a0atma – <\/em>meaning\u00a0Soul<\/em>.\u00a0Rabindranath Tagore\u00a0is said to have accorded this title to him.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Gandhianism or Gandhism<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The name of Mahatma Gandhi transcends the bounds of race, religion and nation-states, and has emerged as the prophetic voice of the 21st century. He is remembered for his passionate adherence to the practice of non-violence and his supreme humanism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Gandhism is a body of ideas that describes the inspiration, vision, and the life work of Gandhi.
