First, due to the origin of the pandemic and role of China in handling it initially. Second, due to its irrational and unexplained aggressive behavior in these difficult times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Traits that come to mind whenever China is mentioned are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Autocratic, Dictatorial, Tyrannical, Oppressive and Despotic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hypocritical, Deceitful, Untrustworthy and Untruthful.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Secretive, Ambiguous and Unpredictable<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Unscrupulous, Unethical and Crafty<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Aggressive, Belligerent and Intrusive.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dragon has always been an <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">enigma and a mystery <span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8211;\u00a0 a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">challenge for everyone to solve the riddle<\/span>. In my opinion the Dragon\u2019s Brain is<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> DIFFERENTLY WIRED<\/span>. Some of the factors which help in understanding the method in madness are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Influencing Factors<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>Historical Imprint<\/u>. China is an ancient civilization with thousands of years of history. Some of the past events have made an everlasting impact on the Chinese psyche and thinking. Chinese people and decision makers often refer\u00a0 back to their history and follow the writings of their ancient scholars and philosophers. Revival of ancient silk route and following the writings of Sun Tzu in letter and spirit are some such examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>Regaining Lost Glory<\/u>. From its history, the country derives the aspiration of regaining its lost glory. Various theories have been articulated on this subject.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>Middle Kingdom Syndrome<\/u>. Chinese feel that at one time they were the center of the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>Cone Theory<\/u>. In my opinion the Chinese see the world as a cone where they are located in the center and top of the cone.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>Birth Right to be World Leaders<\/u>. They feel they deserve to be the world leaders as it was in the past. They also consider themselves to be a superior race and regaining the top position is their birth right.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>Preventing Reoccurrence of Century of Humiliation<\/u>. Historically they feel humiliated about the century where they were displaced from top and had no say in world affairs. Their actions and decisions are influenced by this fact so as to prevent any\u00a0 reoccurrence of such nature.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>One Sun in the sky<\/u>. They feel they should be the only superpower in the world. They are gradually and systematically working towards it in a time bound manner. At present bipolar world and unipolar Asia is acceptable to them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>Empire State Mentality.<\/u> In some ways China&#8217;s thinking seems to be in a time wrap. They still aspire to be an empire, like it used to be in olden days. The guiding principle being that a \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">strong empire expands and a weaker empire shrinks<\/span>\u201d.<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> With this in mind, they aspire for and try to get absolute power, more territory and <\/span>deferential respect from others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>World through Chinese Prism<\/u>. China classifies other countries of the world under two categories. <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Either you are an enemy or a subordinate<\/span><\/em>. <em>They have<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> no friends but only interests<\/span><\/em>. In the past they have fought wars with their so called two friends (Vietnam and Russia). In the present context their only close\u00a0 friendship with Pakistan is more a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">marriage of convenience<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>Engagements for Gains<\/u>. Chinese engagements with other countries\u00a0 are never for good will or out of love and friendship. There is always an ulterior motive and some gain to be derived. Their <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">cheque book diplomacy, debt traps and hidden agendas in dealings<\/span> are examples of this aspect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>Bilateral vis-\u00e0-vis Multilateral<\/u>. China believes in one to one bilateral dealings rather than multilateral engagements. China feels that she can take advantage of individual weakness to impose her will by manipulation, diplomacy and other devious means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>Domestic Dynamics.<\/u> China considers Democracy to be a constraint for both decision making and execution of decisions. Domestic functioning can be summarized as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Leader is considered to be supreme followed by the CPC.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Defense Forces especially PLA are used to rule the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The party rules with an iron fist\u00a0 in a velvet glove.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The People are constantly and extensively monitored.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Either one tows the line or gets eliminated, dissent if any is dealt with severely. Dissidents are eliminated under the guise of weeding out corruption.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Local populace is kept in an information bubble, isolated from world. There are two types of media one for domestic consumption and one for global consumption.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Demographic change is a common norm &#8211; Xinjiang, Tibet\u00a0 and Mongolia are examples of this, while Hong Kong and Taiwan fear this happening in future.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><u>World Diplomacy and Politics.<\/u> Influence of domestic dynamics is visible even in the international dealings. <em>Rivalries, conflicts, deceit, betrayals and shifting alliances<\/em> are considered part of the game. It reminds one, of the serial \u201c<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Game of Thrones<\/span>\u201d.<\/em> It is considered as a zero sum game with guiding principles as <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>survival of the fittest and y<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>our loss is my gain<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a
